Acupuncture for Knee Pain, Back Pain & Sciatica

Knee osteoarthritis, lower back pain, slipped-disc pain and pain running down the leg.

Back pain and knee pain make ordinary things hard: climbing stairs, sitting through a journey, getting up from the floor. Sciatica adds a sharp or burning pain that runs from the lower back down the leg.

These are the complaints acupuncture is best known for. Treatment aims to reduce pain, relax muscle spasm and help you stay active, which matters most for long-term recovery.

What people come to us with

  • Knee pain from osteoarthritis and age-related wear
  • Long-standing lower back pain and stiffness
  • Sciatica: pain, tingling or numbness travelling down the leg
  • Pain related to a slipped or bulging disc
  • Back pain after long sitting, travel or lifting

How treatment is approached

Points around the lower back, hip and leg are combined with points further away that influence the same pathway. For knee pain, points around the joint are used to ease pain and swelling.

Acupressure and sujok are used where needles are not suitable or not wanted. Patients who find it hard to travel because of pain can be treated at home.

Therapies used: acupuncture, acupressure, sujok therapy. Home visits are available.

What to expect

Chronic back pain and knee osteoarthritis are among the conditions with the best evidence for acupuncture. Pain relief often builds over several sessions. Acupuncture does not reverse joint wear or repair a disc, but less pain makes it easier to walk, exercise and sleep.

See a doctor first if you have

  • Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the groin: go to hospital immediately
  • Sudden weakness in a leg or foot
  • Back pain after a fall or injury
  • Back pain with fever or unexplained weight loss
  • A knee that is hot, very swollen or cannot take weight

Common questions

Can acupuncture help me avoid knee surgery?

Acupuncture can reduce pain and help you stay mobile, and some people manage well with it for a long time. Whether surgery is needed depends on the joint itself, which is a decision for you and your orthopaedic doctor.

I have a slipped disc. Is acupuncture safe?

In most cases yes, and it is commonly used for disc-related pain. Please bring your MRI report and tell the practitioner about any numbness or weakness, so treatment can be planned safely.

Do you treat at home if I cannot travel?

Yes. Home visits are available for patients who find travelling painful or difficult.
